London, United Kingdom E11 4AA

<>

The 491 Gallery is a social centre and multi-disciplinary gallery in in Leytonstone, London, England. Taking its name from its street number, 491 Grove Green Road, the former factory is now home to a community-led art organisation and serves as a constant exhibition space for a diverse range of artists of different origins working in varied media. It contains a range of art and music studios, which are used to host workshops, classes and musical rehearsals. Following the closure of its original business, the building was used as a storage space and warehouse for materials being used to construct the A12 road that cuts through Leytonstone and the surrounding areas. Unlike the rest of the surrounding buildings, it and the few neighbouring houses were not subject to compulsory purchase orders and demolition for the A12 site. When in late 2000 the building was abandoned, it became occupied by a group of homeless drug users, who remained in it for some six months. Within a month of their vacating the premises, the building was reoccupied by a group of artists, who spent the next several years turning it into a vibrant community space. Along with its neighbouring building, Vertigo — named after the eponymous film by Alfred Hitchcock, a former Leytonstone resident — the 491 Gallery is currently one of the longest running organisations of its kind.

London, United Kingdom E9 5

Hackney Marshes is an area of grassland on the western bank of the River Lea in the London Borough of Hackney. It was incorporated into the Lee Valley Park in 1967. It was originally a true marsh, but was extensively drained from Medieval times, and rubble was dumped here from buildings damaged by air raids during World War II.The principal area of the marsh lies below Lea Bridge Road between the Old River Lea, and the Hackney Cut - an artificial channel of the Lee Navigation, dug about 1770, to avoid a loop in the natural watercourse. The southern extent is marked by the A12; although the industrial land around Hackney Wick Stadium was originally an extension of the marsh, it now forms a part of the Olympic Park for the 2012 Summer Olympics.Hackney Marsh is one of the largest areas of common land in Greater London, with 136.01ha of protected commons.

Sutton House, London

London, United Kingdom E9 6

020 8986 2264

Sutton House is a Grade II*-listed Tudor manor house in Homerton High Street, Hackney, London, England. It is owned by the National Trust.HistoryOriginally known as 'Bryck Place', Sutton House was built in 1535 by Sir Ralph Sadleir, Principal Secretary of State to Henry VIII, and is the oldest residential building in Hackney. It is a rare example of a red brick building from the Tudor period. Sutton House became home to a succession of merchants, sea captains, Huguenot silk-weavers, Victorian schoolmistresses and Edwardian clergy. The frontage was modified in the Georgian period, but the core remains an essentially Tudor building. Oak panelled rooms, including a rare 'linen fold' room, Tudor windows and carved fireplaces survive intact, and an exhibition tells the history of the house and its former occupants. At the turn of the 18th century, Hackney was renowned for its many schools, and Sutton House contained a boys' school, with headmaster Dr Burnet, which was attended in 1818 by the novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton. The building next became Milford House girls' school.

The Carpenter's Arms Jago Sessions
Distance: 2.0 mi Tourist Information
135 Cambridge Heath Road
London, United Kingdom E1 5RN

The Carpenter"s Arms is a pub like no other... I could tell you that it's a proper old school East End boozer, the likes of which are rapidly dying out... I could tell you about the bling, double-breasted pin-stripe brigade and octogenarian singers on a Saturday night... I could talk about the gangsters and the Johns, the Pearly Kings and Queens knees-ups and the three generations of my family who've been drinking there... I could talk about the cheap prices, incredible homecooked food menu, late license and easy transport connections that will get you to and from your new dysfunctional home-from-home... ....but unless you get your 'arty farty' arses down and earn your stripes with the regulars, you just won't understand. For those of you interested in where the term 'Jago' comes from...here's a little link: http://www.londonfictions.com/arthur-morrison-a-child-of-the-jago.html See you there! xxxxxxxxxxx NB The Carpenter's Arms is a CASH ONLY pub
