Students will critically engage with key ideas of creativity, sharing and visibility in social media, and will participate in creative and reflective practice using leading social media tools and platforms. 2) Critical Theory of Social Media and the Internet (20 credits=10 ECTS, spring) This module provides an overview of the critical and theoretical analysis of how the Internet and social media (Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, WikiLeaks, file sharing, blogs etc) shape and impact on society, the economy and politics and how power structures in society shape the Internet and social media. 3) MA Dissertation (60 credits) The dissertation is either a) a research work that involves primary research on a subject chosen by the student and which is relevant to the MA in Social Media and is approved by the supervisor. The completed dissertation will be approximately 15,000 words. or b) an independent project, in which social media are created, designed and applied to a specific context in a manner that is informed by theory. The candidate will create a social media artefact accompanied by a written report of approximately 7,000 words, in which the student critically reflects on their social media project, and grounds it in relevant theory. B: Elective modules: A number of elective modules are offered each year. Students must choose four elective modules (=80 credits). We recommend that you choose modules that relate to your planned dissertation topic. The elective modules are organised in 3 topical clusters. Students are free to choose any combination of modules and clusters for completing the four elective modules: Thematic Area 1: Theory and Global Political Economy of the Media and Communication This thematic area consists of elective modules that provide an understanding of the globalisation of the media as well as the economic and political power structures that shape the media landscape. Thematic Area 2: Media Politics, Regulation and Media Business Strategies This thematic area offers elective modules that focus on political dimensions of the media, such as state regulation and activism as well as aspects of media use in organisations. Thematic Area 3: Media, Culture and Everyday Life This thematic area provides modules that have a focus on how humans use the media in everyday culture as audiences, diverse community or citizens interested in news.
