The Bogle Stroll started in 1961 when a group of UMIST lecturers missed the last bus home in Lancaster and decided to walk the 55 miles back to Manchester. Along the way some of the group started to hallucinate and saw the Bogle (a Lancashire imp of folklore) , in their imagination the Bogle was taunting the walkers, willing them to give up. It is in defeating the Bogle that the event gets its name.
In the years that followed the event became a highlight of the UMIST calendar with up to 3000 people taking part each year during the 70′s. As roads became busier and A roads turned to motorways the route has changed to now be two loops of Greater Manchester. The event is still based at the UMIST Students Association (now the University of Manchester Students Union), adjacent to Manchester Piccadilly Station, and takes walkers to Manchester Airport, Stockport, Failsworth, Farnworth and Salford. Still a 55 mile stroll and still an exceptional challenge.
The event is now organised by Manchester RAG as part of UMSU. Entirely volunteer led, the event is produced at a very low cost to enable as many people to take part as possible.
In 2012 we are happy to introduce The Children’s Society as our charity of the year.
Cross X over is taking the Manchester rock and alternative scene by storm!
A non profit organisation providing the most varied music, the most inventive nights and the most welcoming atmosphere of any alternative club night, Cross X over gives its customers exactly what they have been missing.
Not only do our resident DJs play the most progressive and eclectic mix of: Grunge, Rock, Metal, Hip Hop, EBM, Goth, Industrial and many more, but they take requests all night and play exactly what the customers ask for.
With 2 rooms, resident DJs, plus guest DJs from other clubs from around the country we have an almost limitless amount of music to play for our loyal clientele.
As well as this we have a whole host of other performers and artistes giving our nights a party atmosphere and providing a visual vibrancy to rival the musical indulgence of our club.
We are not just a club though we are a panacea for the alternative community, we are an all welcoming, all embracing community hub, encouraging our revelers to be who they are and celebrate their individuality.
Our Resident DJs are:
DJ Midnight- First started spinning industrial/goth tunes on the wheels of steel back in 1998 at Club Lash and continues to do so as a permanent fixture. A foray through the party scene playing music at after parties and other one off events eventually saw him play guest slots at club nights such as Sin City, Uprising, Replicate, Deviants Blackpool, Midian, Consent, Jilly’s Rockworld, Darklands, Analoguetrash, ArA and also 3 years at Infest. His own personal club nights either through management or as resident are Retch, Midlife Crisis and Black Planet.
DJ Gumpy- Has over 20 years of experience as an alternative DJ in the local scene and is still as mad and unpredictable as ever. He has previously been found getting bodies moving in Jilly’s Rockworld, Sin City, Club Lash, and The Alma Inn.
DJ Spindles- Has been getting floors full and people rocking for 25 years, he knows how to get a room worked up. Playing almost anything you could want from new age to old school rock, hip hop metal and dance, he definitely has eclectic tastes. Easily recognisable from his over 10 years at Rock Kitchen and his many years in some epic clubs including Maximes and Space city.
Our performers include the likes of: The Cross X over Dancers, on podium and stage, Poi and fire Poi, Neon Hula Hoops, Fire dancers, LED performers, walkabout and visual entertainment from our hosts and hostesses and face painting.
Hi. My name is Joe, but most of my pupils call me Uncle Joe. I’ve been teaching people how to drive for over 6 years and worked for some of the biggest names in the industry but now I’m bringing my own approach and expertise to the learner drivers of Manchester.
