Urmston Artisan Market
Distance: 1.2 mi Tourist Information
Railway Rd, Urmston
Manchester, United Kingdom M41 0XL

Fresh aromas, vivid colours, eclectic treasures, buzzing crowds – a mere stroll amongst the many (often 100+) stalls of an Artisan Market are enough to invigorate the senses and whet the appetite. These markets aim to keep things authentic, providing a rare but enchanting opportunity to meet the many food & craft producers & suppliers. The local entertainment and local community groups provide a real sense of ownership, adding to the atmosphere, the mix and bustle reminiscent of yesteryear with a contemporary twist. It is a haven for anybody who cares about the quality and provenance of the food they eat, for those that seek something different from that on supermarket shelves. It provides a cornucopia of exquisite handcrafted, artistic items and an opportunity to interact with the artisan who has produced them. But it’s not just the sheer quality of the items on offer that makes an Artisan Market so special – it is also about the people and the place. Locally based craftspeople and producers who are passionate about their products represent each town. Every market incorporates local organisations and community groups, and is lifted by local entertainers all keen to showcase the homegrown talents of their performers. Most of our stallholders are themselves primary producers – people who grow, make, create, style, rear, craft or bake the products that they sell. Others are suppliers with intimate knowledge of their products and the people who made them. As a result, the Artisan Markets have become a vast repository of culinary knowledge, artisan craftsmanship and skills from previous generations. It’s a place to explore, to ask questions, to discover new flavours, stumble upon raw talent, unearth entrepreneurship, nurture bygone mastery, and to savour a unique, buzzing atmosphere. Artisan Markets are more than a place to buy or sell goods, they are all encompassing, dynamic events that bring the town alive. We strive to source the very finest artisan traders and products to deliver a high quality and heterogeneous mix for our visitors. This offer compliments rather than competes with the high street retailers providing a synergistic environment. Entertainment is provided which is locally sourced and inspirational. Community groups and organisations are encouraged to think outside the box and get involved in a creative way, offering them a platform to showcase themselves to the wider community – which in itself provides a unique local feel and sense of pride, as well as valuable exposure. The Artisan Market is a place where our visitors can connect and interact with the specialists, meet friends, be introduced to new ideas and enjoy their town to the full. Our events have a warmth about them, they increase visitor numbers to the town, they improve the dwell time spent within the town, they showcase what the town has to offer every day of the month and ultimately we provide an exceptional day out for our visitors.

Waterside Arts Centre is a thriving and vibrant arts venue in the heart of Sale in Greater Manchester. Comprising a theatre, art galleries, studios and workspaces, the centre is an important regional hub for both performance and visual art. It is a major touring venue for theatre productions, music groups, comedians and art exhibitions, while at the same time providing a vital resource for the local community. The centres hosts classes, seminars and workshops on subjects ranging from drama to salsa and poetry to tai chi. It also regularly serves a base for regional music and performance groups including Touchdown Dance, Sale Chamber Orchestra and Trafford Youth Orchestra. A brochure containing a full list of all the centre’s performances, exhibitions, classes and events is produced three times a year (January - April, May - August and September to December). The centre is supported by Trafford Council, Arts Council England, Manchester Airport and Lauriston School Trust. It’s partners are Cofely, PANDA and All About Audiences. Waterside Arts Centre forms part of the Sale Waterside Complex which overlooks the attractive Waterside Plaza and Bridgewater Canal. Also housed in the complex are the Waterside Bar and OCA Restaurant as well as Sale Library, Youth Talk Shop and Trafford Direct and Trafford Council Offices. History Waterside Arts Centre occupies the site of the old Sale Civic Theatre as well as part of the former Trafford Council Town Hall. Following the closure of the theatre and the relocation of the town hall to Stretford, plans were made to rebuild and update the site into a new arts venue. After 10 years of work, the Waterside Arts Centre was able to launch its first artistic programme in November 2004. Now a modern arts venue, the centre continues to reflect several aspects of its local heritage. The 350 seat theatre is named after the late Sale-born screenwriter Robert Bolt. Born in 1926, Bolt became one of the most successful playwrights and screenwriters of his generation. He won Oscars for his screenplays for Doctor Zhivago and A Man for All Seasons, which he adapted from his own play. He also penned the script for David Lean’s epic 1962 classic Lawrence of Arabia. The centre was officially opened by Bolt’s widow, Sarah Miles. The centre’s Lauriston Gallery also commemorates the Trafford based Lauriston Trust. The aim of the trust is to promote the arts in all their forms to young people in Trafford and Greater Manchester. It provided invaluable support to the gallery, which was opened by trust chair, Betty Gallimore MBE, on April 29, 2004. The Waterside’s civic heritage has too been preserved. The centre’s venue known as The Chamber is the former meeting chamber of the old Trafford Council Town Hall. The room remains the same as when constructed in the 1930s. It boasts wood panelled walls, parquet flooring and art deco flourishes.

Resurrected by the multi-talented Eccles Community Hall Organisation (ECHO), Eccles Town Hall is a stunning space in the centre of Eccles and one of the largest rooms in Salford. The Hall provides a much needed community space for local people and is available for hire for concerts, performances, dance, (we have a sprung floor), conferences, meetings, trade shows, weddings, parties or anything else the hall may inspire you to do! Following the renovation of the Ballroom, the remaining refurbishment plans are ongoing. Ultimately the aim is for ECHO to manage the space through the employment of staff and with the help of local community volunteers. So far over £300,000 has been spent on the building but we will need up to twice as much again to restore all areas of the building completely. This page will keep you up to date with event details, stories and images from the Hall. Feel free to post your pictures, like us, recommend us and join in!
