Gammeltorv
København, Denmark 1457

Gammeltorv is the oldest square in Copenhagen, Denmark. With adjoining Nytorv it forms a common space along the Strøget pedestrian zone. While the square dates back to the foundation of the city in the 12th century, most of its buildings were constructed after the Great Fire of 1795 in Neoclassical style. Another dominating feature is the Caritas Well, a Renaissance fountain erected by King Christian IV in 1610.Historically, Gammeltorv has been the focal point of Copenhagen's judicial and political life as well as one of its two principal marketplaces. Several former city halls have been located on the square or in its immediate vicinity. Surprisingly, its name is not a reference to adjoining Nytorv but to the slightly younger Amagertorv, Copenhagen's other major market in early times.HistoryOriginsAlready prior to Absolon's construction of his castle on Slotsholmen, there seems to have been a marketplace at Gammeltorv, possibly also a Thing. Copenhagen's first town hall, of which practically nothing is known, was built on the east side of the square but later destroyed during Hanseatic capture and pillaging of the city in 1368. In 1374 the square is referred to as Forum and in 1446 the square is referred to as "the old square" as opposed to the somewhat younger Amagertorv. From 1470 the name Gammeltorv is used consistently.

Islands Brygge is a harbourfront area in central Copenhagen, Denmark, located on the north-western coast of Amager. The neighbourhood is noted for its waterfront park Havneparken, which is one of the most popular areas along the Copenhagen harbourfront and the location of one of the Copenhagen Harbour Baths.Established through a series of land reclamations from the 1880s, it served both military, residential, industrial and dockland purposes. In the mid-20th century it developed an infamous reputation as a neglected industrial and dockland area, but since 2000 it has undergone massive redevelopment and has become a fashionable and attractive neighbourhood. It is characterized by a mixture of old buildings and modern architecture, with a number of old structures relating to the area's dockland past preserved and converted into new functions.GeographyIslands Brygge has an area of roughly 1 km² and a population of 12,147, though it has never been an administrative unit with formally defined boundaries. It can be thought of as bounded by the Stadsgraven moat to the north, Copenhagen Harbour to the west, the Nokken allotments to the south, Ørestad North to the north-east and Amager Common to the east. For some of its course, Artillerivej defines the eastern border, but towards the north Islands Brygge straddles the street; Islands Brygge Metro Station, the Serum Institute and Islandsbrygge School, all of which are normally considered Islands Brygge, are all located east of Artillerivej.

-o- In English: KAFFI - the collective coffee shop placed at Islands Brygge. Here great quality and local atmosphere comes into play. 14th of February 2013 a group of local residents and regular costumers from the former Café Nose Wise, located Vestmannagade 4 on Islands Brygge in Copenhagen, became the “self-made owners” of the new coffee shop KAFFI. KAFFI means coffee in Icelandic and thus might very well be the perfect name for a coffee shop that is located at “the quay of Iceland” (which is the direct translation of Islands Brygge). But there’s more to it than meets the eye: KAFFI is owned and run by residents from Islands Brygge. And most importantly - at least if you, like the new owners, appreciate good coffee - the aim here at KAFFI is to serve you the best coffee in town. What’s the story? More than “just” a coffee shop… The past years a strong sense of community has evolved among local customers frequenting Café Nose Wise – a sense of community that has even resulted in private gatherings and new friendships. When the former owners of Café Nose Wise discontinued operations at the end of 2012 de facto closing down the café, this was seen as a great loss. A group of local residents quickly united with the aim of reopening the café, - which by then had become an important focal point, in which a local community existed, and that was considered indispensable were this community to further thrive and develop. In less than two months the necessary funds were raised, and the purchase of the café came into effect making the collective ownership of KAFFI a reality. The new owners represent a wide range of both old and new residents with completely different backgrounds and competences. But they – or we – have at least one thing in common: The love for quality coffee, food and wine! If you share “our taste” as we hope you do, please don’t hesitate to come visit us. What’s on the menu? A laid-back local atmosphere, and then some more The idea is to continue the same local atmosphere and authenticity at KAFFI that once thrived at Café Nose Wise. To prosper, however, we want to keep the best of yesterday by giving it tomorrow’s sense of edge and freshness. This is what you get: - Friendly, open and laid-back local atmosphere - Quality coffee beyond the ordinary - A varied selection of interesting wines - Home-baked bread, cakes and quality products at a reasonable price Behind the bar: New and old forces unite to bring you the best coffee There is Pia. Pia is not only “one of the owners”. Pia has many years of experience as both chef and manager within the food and catering sector. The primary role of Pia is to manage KAFFI on a daily basis, but as a passionate cook, you will also from time to time be able to experience the results of her exercising magic tricks in the kitchen. And there is Pham. As a former customer at Café Nose Wise you will undoubtedly remember Pham, not only as a very friendly and service minded personality, but as the man making your coffee experience way more than just a little bit better than the usual one. It is therefore a great asset for KAFFI that Pham will continue behind (and around) the bar to make the coffee we appreciate. Due to his good “coffee spirit” and eminent ability to interact with customers, he has indeed been a crucial factor behind the positive atmosphere that has evolved around this café now known as KAFFI. Bring it on Pham! And don’t forget: Everybody’s welcome! KAFFI is going to be a coffee shop for local residents, but where tourists and people from other parts of town and country are very welcome indeed. Like the “Jutlanders” (people from Jutland) who now and then stray into “our hood”, you are guaranteed a “local experience” that might very well stay with you for more than just a little while. At least we hope so. We look forward to welcoming you at KAFFI – the best coffee shop on Islands Brygge. See you soon Cheers! The team behind KAFFI

The second part of the name is by, Danish for "town" or "city", hinting that the facilities are extensive enough to operate as a mini city within Copenhagen. The main building is a 22,000 square metre facility situated directly behind Copenhagen Central Station. A walled-off portion provides infrastructure for DGI-byen's numerous cultural activities and events. DGI-byen is a rapidly expanding area of the city, with ongoing construction. DGI-byen hosts a variety of banquets, concerts, etc. One recognizable landmark seen from the Central Station is a giant outdoor climbing gym wall. Museum Erotica was a sex museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, located just off of Strøget, Copenhagen's main shopping street. The museum was founded by director / photographer Ole Ege and business manager Kim Clausen. It originally opened in 1992 at Vesterbrogade 31 in Copenhagen. On May 14, 1994 it reopened at Købmagergade 24, where it remained until it closed in March 2009, following the sudden, unexpected death of Kim Clausen in 2008, and then the financial recession. The museum claimed to have had one million visitors. The museum often described itself as having "illustrated some of the sex life of Homo sapiens", which reflects its very historic and holistic approach to its exhibitions. The walk through the museum took a visitor through many exhibits in roughly chronological order. A good deal of written commentary in English and Danish explained and augmented many of the items on display. There were extensive exhibitions on the beginning of erotic photography, a room with Playboy-centerfolds and other American pinups, and a special exhibition on Marilyn Monroe, among other things. One of the final displays in Museum Erotica was a small room with a sofa opposite a large wall of small television screens each showing a different porno video. The selections reflected the eclectic nature of the museum's displays.
