Zaha Hadid, founding partner of Zaha Hadid Architects, was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004 and is internationally known for her built, theoretical and academic work. Each of her dynamic and innovative projects builds on over thirty years of revolutionary experimentation and research in the interrelated fields of urbanism, architecture and design. Working with senior office partner Patrik Schumacher, Hadid’s interest is in the rigorous interface between architecture, landscape, and geology as the practice integrates natural topography and human-made systems that lead to experimentation with cutting-edge technologies. Such a process often results in unexpected and dynamic architectural forms. The MAXXI: National Museum of 21st Century Art in Rome, BMW Central Building in Leipzig and Guangzhou Opera House are excellent demonstrations of the practice’s quest for complex, dynamic space. Currently, the practice is working on a multitude of projects including; the KAPSARC Research Centre in Riyadh, the Aquatics Centre for the London 2012 Olympic Games, High-Speed Train Stations in Naples and Durango, the CMA CGM Head Office tower in Marseille and urban master-plans in Cairo, Istanbul, China, Singapore and the Middle East. Zaha Hadid Architects continues to be a global leader in pioneering research and design investigation. Collaborations with artists, designers, engineers and clients that lead their industries have advanced the practice’s diversity and knowledge, whilst the implementation of state-of-the-art technologies have aided the realization of fluid, dynamic and therefore complex architectural structures.

AL_A is an award-winning architecture and design studio. It was founded in 2009 by Amanda Levete and grew out of Future Systems, a practice widely regarded as laying down the agenda for architecture in the twenty-first century, with works including the Stirling Prize-winning Media Centre at Lord’s Cricket Ground and the Selfridges department store, Birmingham. Led by Amanda Levete, Ho-Yin Ng, Maximiliano Arrocet and Alice Dietsch, AL_A has refined an intuitive and strategic approach to design that has radicalised clients and briefs, and led to a diverse range of concepts for cultural, retail and commercial schemes around the world. The practice’s creative relationship with a client is defined by a mutual respect as well as being reciprocally demanding: AL_A challenge assumptions and presuppositions, and expect to be challenged in return. Recent commissions include the highly anticipated expansion of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Central Embassy, a 1.5 million sq ft mixed-use development in Bangkok on the former grounds of the British embassy, a new centre for the cancer care charity Maggie’s, a 13-hectare media campus for Sky, and a cultural centre in Lisbon commissioned by EDP, one of the world’s foremost energy companies. Recent invited competitions include a new campus for the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, the design of new social spaces for Oriel College at Oxford University, the UK Pavilion for the Milan Expo 2015, galleries for the Science Museum in London, and the new wing of the Mumbai City Museum. Our current self-generated projects include Tincan, a pop-up restaurant project in London’s Soho, serving the best tinned seafood in the world, tablO, an open source tool for a product to aid designers who use tablets, and a series of stackable football pitches that respond to London’s urban context and shortage of sports facilities. Each and every AL_A project gives an insight into our way of thinking, combining a strategic and intuitive approach with an attention to detail.

Over 30 years Nicholas Hare Architects have built a balanced portfolio of projects. Our work includes buildings for the arts, education, medicine, research and different kinds of workplaces. This balance is important to us as it both enables us to widen our experience and ensure a fresh approach to all design challenges. The scale of projects ranges from small primary school adaptions to major commercial office developments. Our projects often embrace project management, urban design and masterplanning as well as architectural design as we aim to provide a comprehensive service that ensures all of our client’s aims are realised - including programme and cost targets. We enjoy working collaboratively generating ideas that are inspired by the unique context of the site and our client’s aspirations that we analyse and evaluate together. The emerging designs are always fresh, responsive and thoroughly interrogated. It also means that our projects are quite different although guided by some consistent values and principles. Chief amongst these is responsibility towards the environment which extends from helping to create sustainable communities to challenging targets for carbon reduction. We like to create buildings and spaces that are enjoyable and delightful to use and a sustainable approach with its focus on natural light and the careful selection of materials is fundamental to this aim. We are committed to collaboration in our work with other consultants and constructors too as we believe teamwork and the development of fully integrated designs are the key to the successful delivery of projects. In our own office, dedicated teams are formed for each project but ideas shared across the studio informally and through a regular programme of peer reviews and design debates which enhances awareness of new technologies and encourages innovation. Our work has received wide recognition through a variety of awards and publications. Some of these celebrate our efficient delivery of projects as well as the quality of design. Today, the practice numbers over 50 people and continues to grow organically.

Urban Projects Bureau

London, NW5 2BJ

Committed to spatial practice as a transformative process, Urban Projects Bureau engages in pioneering work that expands the possibilities of design innovation, pushing the boundaries of what architecture and urbanism can do and be. Urban Projects Bureau intervenes in processes of social, political and urban change through research, teaching, spatial strategy and design. Our approach is strategic in nature and specific in focus: we believe in constructing spaces as a way of generating change. We have a breadth of experience and knowledge in architecture and urbanism, and have undertaken projects in the UK, Europe, Asia, South America and South Africa, and have worked with leading international political agencies and cultural institutions. Our studio is structured into three main specialism’s: UPB Projects, UPB Research, and UPB Actions, which work independently and collaboratively as part of our combined practice. We work across a range of scales and sectors, and apply our analytical thinking and design expertise to public and private projects of varying sizes and types – from social housing to exhibitions and interiors, from regional development strategies to the design of civic spaces. Key to our work is an interest in the ways in which spaces are inhabited and used, and a commitment to the public realm as a place of social exchange and political activity. Urban Projects Bureau work with urban processes that shape the city and its institutions, and operate as a think tank to develop critical frameworks through which to re-think existing challenges and envision alternative urban models. Extending the potential of urbanism as a discipline, we collaborate with government bodies, NGO’s, social agencies, and public organisations to apply design-thinking to complex urban situations, political and institutional affairs. UPB was selected to exhibit in the British Pavilion in the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale 2012, and was included in the Guardian portrait of key players in British Architecture 2012.

We Love Soul began in May 2009 as a monthly session. The night featured Soulful House & House Classics, Soul, Funk, Disco, Boogie, Rare Groove every 3rd Saturday of across two floors in Shoreditch. The night was specifically formulated to appeal to an over 30's clientèle who were still serious about partying to quality music. In May 2010 the event moved to Hidden in Vauxhall, where the availability of 3 rooms instead of two allowed the night to expand its music policy to encompass R&B, Swing, Party Anthems and Reggae. We Love Soul was able to take advantage of the fact the venue had a late night licence for the Bank Holiday and host some their most memorable nights on Easter Sunday, May and August Bank Holidays. Also to add variety to the proceedings the musical configuration the rooms were rotated so one event’s Soul, Funk, Disco & Boogie room would be another event’s Soulful House or R&B room Here the event began to incorporate regular live performances ranging from great soul legends from the States to the very best home grown UK talents i.e., Omar / Don-E / Juliet Roberts / Rose Windross (Soul II Soul) / Shaun Escoffery / Leroy Burgess Howard Johnson / Kenny Thomas / Mick Murphy (The System) / Pauline Henry (The Chimes) / Loose Ends / James D-Train Williams / Shea Soul / Junior Giscombe / Michael Watford / David Joseph (Hi-Tension) / Ingrid Mansfield-Allman (The Voice of Southern Freeze) / Phil Fearon … to name just a few Now in its 5th successful year, we have moved location due to the closure of Hidden and we are now situated at: The Garage, 20 -22 Highbury Corner, N5 1RD (Opposite Highbury & Islington station) We Love Soul is one London’s biggest and most popular over 30’s soul nights out! Bruno Loubet’s résumé includes some of the UK’s best restaurants including La Tante Claire, Head Chef at Le Manoir aux Quat'Saison, The Four Seasons, Bistrot Bruno and L’Odéon Bistrot Bruno Loubet opened in February 2010 at The Zetter Hotel in Clerkenwell, London. Returning to London after eight years living and working in Brisbane, Australia, Bruno brought his distinctive modern bistrot food to one of London’s leading boutique hotels, with great success. Grain Store explores a different side to Bruno’s skill and creativity. There are no geographical boundaries to the influences that have inspired the eclectic menu – they are a culmination of Bruno’s extensive travels and the years dedicated to his beloved vegetable patch. Although many dishes have a meat or fish element, this menu gives vegetables equal billing, if not the starring role. Fermented, sprouting, pickled and smoked ingredients feature alongside the fresh and the seasonal. Flavour above all else is king. “This is the restaurant I have dreamt of opening for years and the time really feels right now. I love meat and could never give it up entirely, but the endless opportunities that focusing on vegetables allows me – the colours, flavours, layers and textures – are so exciting” - Bruno Loubet

Unlike its name would suggest, The Somers Town Coffee House is less of a coffee spot and more of an old British boozer with a twist… You’ll find this gem of a pub tucked away on Chalton Street, a stone’s throw from Euston station; think rugged wooden tables, comfy armchairs and a plethora of pints to pick from. Have yourself a good ol’ snoop around the bookcase in the back though and you might just unearth a little hidden secret. Yep, a uniquely-designed, themed dining space – known as Ssshh Supper Club – there are four different rooms, each with its own quirky interior (one has grass!). But that’s not all. Venture downstairs and you’ll find Cosy Kettle, the speakeasy cocktail club where tasty expertly-mixed tipples are served into the the early hours of the morning…long after the main pub has closed! All of this would mean nothing if Somers Town Coffee House didn’t deliver on food and drink – fortunately, it does! The pub boasts a whopping 12 craft ales alongside a stunning selection of lagers, wines, spirits, soft drinks and hot drinks. The grub is equally impressive with an all-day menu of scrumptious British classics and yummy desserts. Finally, as if all of this wasn’t enough (you’re demanding, you!) this Central London watering hole also sports a sun-blushed hidden garden. What was that? You’ve found Heaven? We thought so.

From the street the Norfolk Arms is your typical London pub. A place where Charles Dickens might drink with Samuel Pepys. Mix and match benches and tables clutter the pavement where – rather than bewigged gentlemen – local business-types and shoppers refresh after a hard day at the coalface. Inside the traditional feel continues while a lively ambience and fresh paint keep the look free from old-man-and-dog territory. A new breed of gastropub, the Norfolk Arms has already gained critical acclaim, thanks in part to its novel ordering concept. Nevermind starters and mains, this is tapas-meets-home cooking, where you just keep ordering plates of food until you can scarf no more. Roast dinners, pates, scotch eggs and pork belly are joined by Mediterranean flavours throughout.

LVK is a cosy, comfortable and friendly restaurant serving up authentic Vietnamese food with a modern twist. The bar serves up Viet inspired cocktails and beers, with a nod to interesting and handcrafted spirits. Head Chef Thuy says: "I was born in Vietnam, in a small village in the south of the country, called ‘Hanh My’. After the war, life was a considerable struggle for the whole region and so like many others, my family was forced to leave our home and start a new life. We were one of the few, fortunate enough, to be able to start that new life in London. England is an amazing country and London a beautiful city, and having been living here since I was 7, it is without doubt the place that I call home. For those who know me well, food (OK…and shoes and bags!!) has always been a huge passion of mine. A delicious meal, with seconds and maybe thirds, makes a very happy Thuy indeed! My mother often reminds me that my love for food started almost immediately after birth. Never satisfied with just having my own dinner, I was always after my sister’s portions too (by that, she meant…. snatching.... Sorry sis!). Till this day, I can still vividly recollect my childhood in Vietnam and as far back as I can remember, I have always been surrounded by food. My grandparents were farmers, so I grew up with animals running around, a wonderful variety of fruits hanging from trees, morning markets full of freshly picked vegetables, and amazing smells of traditional street food. I often find the smell of certain foods will take me back in time, back to when we had so little, and yet everything meant so much. Now, if you will allow me, I would love to share these wonderful foods with you!"

The Real Food Festival

When we launched the first Real Food Festival at Earls Court back in 2007, the idea was to bring together hundreds of small but passionate food producers of the tastiest and most nutritious food you could find and reconnect people back to where their food came from. We have now staged 5 annual food festivals, all dedicated to celebrating ‘real’ food, by which we mean food that is as close to how nature has provided it. Through these festivals we have brought together over 150,000 people, amazing food producers, passionate chefs (including Raymond Blanc, Giorgio Locatelli, Fergus Henderson and many more world class chefs), musicians, journalists, supportive celebrities, retailers, wholesalers and livestock including sheep, water buffalo, pigs and cows – because that’s where our food comes from! Food shouldn’t be treated as a basic commodity and we have been championing the skills and excellence of small, artisanal food and drink for the last 5 years in an effort to get great tasting, sustainable, ethical and authentic food to as many people as we can. In July 2010, we launched a weekly 3-day market on London’s Southbank so that you would be able to access great produce and buy direct from these producers on a regular basis. All the producers on the market, just like our Festivals, have been carefully selected for their quality but also their commitment to producing in an environmentally responsible and socially conscious way - something that comes naturally with the kind of passion shared by each one of our producers. You’ll find beef from cattle fed on grass; oats from cereals free of pesticides, grown on soil packed with a billion micronutrients; cheeses each with their own distinctive flavours; traditional beers and ales; the freshest, seasonal fruit and vegetables; freshly baked real bread of amazing diversity and taste; artisan charcuterie; hand-crafted chocolates and desserts, all sold to you with an enthusiasm, passion and knowledge that no supermarket employee could ever match. As a regular shopper at a Real Food Market, you will be able to trust the provenance of your food by buying direct from the people who produce it.

Pennies has come to London via the roundabout route of Oxford and Lyme Regis. Its most recent incarnation was at 4 Charlton Place, just off Camden Passage in Islington, where Penny sold vintage china and jewellery, and Oliver sold beautiful vintage clothes. Having closed that shop, we reopened at 41A Amwell Street in the spring of 2011. This pretty street full of Georgian houses and shops will be a fitting final resting place. Please come and see us there! We are open from Tuesday to Saturday, or alternatively you can phone us on 07968201562 to make an appointment.
