491 Gallery
Distance: 2.0 mi Tourist Information
491 Grove Green Road
London, United Kingdom E11 4AA

The 491 Gallery is a social centre and multi-disciplinary gallery in in Leytonstone, London, England. Taking its name from its street number, 491 Grove Green Road, the former factory is now home to a community-led art organisation and serves as a constant exhibition space for a diverse range of artists of different origins working in varied media. It contains a range of art and music studios, which are used to host workshops, classes and musical rehearsals. Following the closure of its original business, the building was used as a storage space and warehouse for materials being used to construct the A12 road that cuts through Leytonstone and the surrounding areas. Unlike the rest of the surrounding buildings, it and the few neighbouring houses were not subject to compulsory purchase orders and demolition for the A12 site. When in late 2000 the building was abandoned, it became occupied by a group of homeless drug users, who remained in it for some six months. Within a month of their vacating the premises, the building was reoccupied by a group of artists, who spent the next several years turning it into a vibrant community space. Along with its neighbouring building, Vertigo — named after the eponymous film by Alfred Hitchcock, a former Leytonstone resident — the 491 Gallery is currently one of the longest running organisations of its kind.

However, our holistic approach, calibre coaching and credentials put it in another league. In the world of performance ‘Triple Threat’ is a standard industry term used to describe someone who can act, sing and dance. Our programme uses these three disciplines. This ‘triple threat’ training helps young people to become a well-rounded individual on stage, on screen and in real life.

Brendan's Bass Solutions
Distance: 1.0 mi Tourist Information
15 Collent Street
London, United Kingdom E9 6SY

Do you hate taking your beloved instrument to a bass shop to be repaired and they charge you loads of money to be unfriendly and not do a very good job? I did, so I started collecting the tools and the knowledge to do it myself. The things I've done: - Reset and dowelled the neck after it was broken on a flight to Ireland in 2008. - Replaced the spike assembly and wire. - Removed the old cheap fingerboard and replaced it with a fine ebony one. Made a new ebony nut to go with it and cut the bridge down to improve the action. - During a long-distance flight the soundpost came through the front. Ouch! So I took off the front, fixed it and put the front back on :) - I also built my own electric stick bass from scratch for my GCSE Technology project - see video. My bass & I have rocked out Glastonbury and Secret Garden Party this summer and she sounds and plays awesome! She's a lot better than she was before! I only use the proper animal hide glue, have the specialist clamps to do the job, use expert carpenters and cabinet makers as consultants, am willing to work to your budget and always offer a friendly service. I offer free home-consultations* (none of us wants to carry our bass about if we can avoid it) and will always be honest if I think something is beyond my capabilities. So you really have nothing to lose by asking. As the hide glue takes a few days to set, in some cases I can even offer a replacement bass while repairs are undertaken. Got back-pain from carrying your bass around on your back? I did too, thats why I invented the BassSkate(TM). Its changed my life and it could change yours too. Each one made bespoke to fit your bass & case. Brendan's Bass Shop can also repair your case for you. We also offer custom paint jobs. All other string instruments looked at too. Having played double bass for 24 years and been professional for 10 years, I fully understand the challenges of a working bassist. *You will have to drop your bass off in Hackney in order for me to work on it.

Peel black the velvet curtain and step-inside a home-made den of world music with devil may care European bohemia, crackled walls, and mismatched furniture, raucous evenings, flowing absinthe and mad dancing. Order local ale from the charmingly peculiar bar man, possibly wearing a ripped ladies pinafore with a string of Pat Butcher pearls … and pull up a seat to watch the Mad Hatter’s tea party begin.

The Brazil WYD, 2013 was arguably a very important couple of weeks for most of us who went. We all owe something to someone because of the journey. Some owe their lives to God, some owe their lives o someone else, and maybe even some owe their gratitude and thanks for everything that had been done for them during the pilgrimage. In any situation, the WYD is something not to be underestimated in terms of life changing opportunities, with the power (given from God) to make you convert, make you look inside yourself or even simply make you a sign for somebody else! SO, we have begun fund raising already, stacking up them Ps to save up for the 2016 WYD to Krakov, Poland: home of the original Polski Sklep that seems to be so famous in Ealing! Anybody who is willing to join the team organising it (by helping set up, lending equipment, serving/making food and drink, singing a full set - or all of the above) will have a full headstart to anybody who hasn't raised. And take into account that not only is it an opportunity where you can help yourself or donate to others, but it is also a great place where you can showcase your talents (if your a musician, a poet, a comic or a magician, it doesn't matter)! Come and play!

Waterlily Venue
Distance: 2.1 mi Tourist Information
69-89 Mile End Road
London, United Kingdom E1 4

The Waterlily Venue is located on Mile End Road a few hundred yards from Whitechapel tube station and just one mile from the City of London. The complex is housed in a unique and original Art Deco building built in the 1920s as the once famous Wickham Department Store. The Department Store shut its doors in the 1960s. The Water Lily complex has bought the building back to life and into the heart of the community. The Water Lily provides Tower Hamlets and the surrounding areas with new office, retail and conference / banqueting facilities. The complex consists of five floors: lower ground, ground and first floors are all dedicated to retail; the second floor houses two conference and banqueting halls with original Art Deco features including the original lead and glass domes and the third floor is a modern business centre.
