Greenwich Picturehouse
Distance: 1.7 mi Tourist Information
180 Greenwich High Road
London, United Kingdom SE10 8NN

0871 902 5732

Considering its importance, it is surprising to learn that historically the borough of Greenwich was poorly served by cinemas. The Trafalgar Cinema opened on 26 December 1912. A small classical building, it served Greenwich until 30 September 1937 when it was joined by the far larger Granada, a typically lavish ‘30s super-cinema. These two flourished until the 1950s when all cinemas fell victim to the success of television and audiences fell dramatically. The Trafalgar, which had become an Odeon in 1945, was the first to close and it became a car showroom in 1960, finally being demolished in 1998. The Granada closed in 1968 to become a bingo hall and was recently gutted for conversion into residential use. The neighbouring towns of Deptford, Lewisham and Woolwich all had far superior cinemas, some of which survive with listed status (Woolwich Granada – now a bingo hall, Woolwich Odeon – now a church) but most have sadly been demolished, including the spectacular art-deco Odeon at Deptford and the lavish Gaumont in Lewisham. In something of a turn-around, Greenwich is now the best-served of these locations in terms of its cinemas. In the multiplex building boom of the 1980s, when most developments were in out-of-town locations, Greenwich was unique in having a council-funded development in the town centre. The Greenwich Cinema was a modern purpose- built three-screen cinema designed by Howard and Unick. Opening in 1989, the cinema was an instant success and continued to do solid business until out-of-town multiplex competition opened nearby. The cinema closed in 2002. City Screen, the UK’s leading independent cinema operator which runs some of London’s most cherished cinemas including the Ritzy, the Gate and the Clapham and Stratford Picturehouses, stepped in to rescue the building and transformed it into a five-screen venue, including a flexible basement screening area with its own lounge bar (which also hosts music and comedy events), a bar and two restaurants. The architects for the conversion were Panter Hudspith who have previously worked with City Screen to create award-winning cinemas.

British Music Experience

The British Music Experience was a permanent exhibition, taking up more than 20,000 square feet, installed into The O₂ Bubble, part of The O₂ in Greenwich, London. Opened with a private concert by The View in March 2009, it featured a retrospective look at the British music industry since 1944. The museum closed on 30 April 2014 and announced it was looking for a new home. Spearheaded by music mogul Harvey Goldsmith, designed by Land Design Studio and funded by The O₂ owners AEG, BME was created to fill a gap in the UK Heritage sector for Rock and Pop Music. Previously, the National Centre for Popular Music in Sheffield had attempted to achieve this but failed to attract visitors and was eventually closed. The British Music Experience has been set up as a charitable trust and has been funded by £9.5m worth of investment from AEG who hope to recoup their costs within five years. Sponsorship agreements with The Performing Rights Society, Gibson Guitars and Sennheiser amongst others have helped establish the exhibition.

The studio has been carefully designed to facilitate every aspect of music from pre-production, recording and mixing to equipment storage, catering and transportation. At the heart of the studio’s set up is ‘The Plank’ - an incredible 1970’s hand built 56 channel analogue recording desk designed, built and used by infamous Krautrock producer Konrad “Connie” Plank. Originally situated at his studio "Connie's Studio" in Cologne it was moved to Studio 7 in 2015. During Connie’s illustrious career he redefined music producing and recording the first four Kraftwerk albums and recording their most famous record "Autobahn" at his studio. He also produced many albums for artists such as Ultravox, The Eurythmics, Devo, Killing Joke and Echo and the Bunnymen. His work with Ultravox inspired Bowie and Eno’s production on their ‘Berlin Trilogy’ series of albums Despite its age ‘The Plank’ is still making history today having been used to record and mix many recent albums including ‘In Our Heads’ and ‘Why Make Sense’ by Hot Chip, ‘Right Thought, Right Words, Right Action’ by Franz Ferdinand, and ‘Communion’ by Years and Years. In addition to the desk Studio 7 also has a world class selection of hardware, software, instruments, amps, keyboards and microphones. It has been designed to offer the perfect blend of analogue vintage equipment and state of the art modern A/D conversion and software.

West Ham Stadium was a stadium that existed between 1928 and 1972 in Custom House, in east London (it was in the London Borough of West Ham, in the county of Essex, at the time of the stadium's construction). The stadium was built in 1928 on Prince Regent Lane, near the site of the present-day Prince Regent DLR station. The stadium had no connection at all with West Ham United football club, who played at the nearby Boleyn Ground, Upton Park from 1904 through 2016.Greyhound racingAt first the venue was used for greyhound racing and speedway on weekdays and was the one greyhound/speedway stadium designed by the famous Archibald Leitch. The stadium held a classic race, The Cesarewitch, and it was West Ham's highlight, originally run over 600 yards and won by some of the greats in its early years. The legendary Mick The Miller, who set a world record time in the heats, won the race in 1930 - he had earlier made his 600-yard debut at the track - while in 1931/2 Future Cutlet became the race's only dual winner. Later, in the fifties, both Pigalle Wonder (dead heat) and Mile Bush Pride were also successful. When West Ham closed in May 1972 the event moved to Belle Vue Stadium.

The Boleyn Ground, often referred to as Upton Park, is a closed football stadium located in Upton Park, east London. From 1904 to 2016 it was the home of West Ham United, with their predecessors Thames Ironworks playing their home games at Hermit Road. The stadium was also briefly used in the early 1990s by Charlton Athletic during their years of financial difficulty. The seating capacity of the ground at closure was 35,016. From the 2016–17 season, West Ham United will play their home games at the Olympic Stadium in nearby Stratford. The last first-class match played at the Boleyn Ground was on 10 May 2016, a 3-2 Premier League win against Manchester United. The stadium is set to be demolished to make way for a new development.HistoryThe club rented Green Street House and grounds in the Municipal Borough of East Ham from the Roman Catholic Church from around 1912. Green Street House was known locally as Boleyn Castle because of its imposing nature and an association with Anne Boleyn, who had either stayed at or, as some believe, owned the house. Hence renting the grounds of "Boleyn Castle" the name Boleyn Ground came into being. The ground is often referred to as Upton Park, after the Upton Park, London area in which it is located.
